The living room is one of the busiest areas of the home. Whether it’s family or friends who come to visit, almost everyone sees this room, so it should be one that offers comfort and innovation. From small living rooms that are only large enough for a couch and end table to living rooms that are large enough to hold every piece of furniture in the house, there are a few ideas on how to redecorate that will give the space a modern appearance.
When you begin redecorating, begin with the paint on the walls. Take away the boring neutral colors, and add a splash of liveliness to the room. Make sure you match the colors together so that they are complimentary instead of clashing. Shades of the same color often work best together, such as greens or blues. Gray usually works well with any color and is sometimes a better accent color than beige or brown. Consider less of a contrast between the paint and the color of the furniture. If the furniture is light, then paint the walls a lighter shade. A country style in the living room would look best with reds and browns while modern living rooms would be better with the greens, yellows and brighter colors.
Before purchasing furniture, think about how often you will sit on it while in the living room. If you’re looking for something for decorative purposes only, then go for the leather or suede. However, if you have children or you plan on using the living room for entertaining, then consider cloth or another material that is easy to wipe clean. Space the furniture so that it is inviting, such as a couch against the longest wall and a recliner near a bookcase or fireplace.
After you have added the furniture, you can start thinking about the decorations. Add a few paintings, sconces or mirrors on the walls along with a large rug in the center of the room to make it appear spacious. Think about the colors of the walls and the furniture, matching the decorations with them so that they blend together. Plants are also an option, but if you don’t have the time to water them, then consider artificial plants.
If you live in an area that sees a lot of sunshine or if you have large windows, then consider wicker. You can add pillows of all colors and patterns, and it’s an easy material to care for as all you have to do is wipe it off with a cloth. The furniture is lightweight and easy to move when decorating as well.
The type of flooring should reflect the amount of traffic that comes through the living room. You don’t want white carpet if there are children and pets, but you don’t want to have something that’s elegant, such as hardwood, if you want a comforting feel to the room. Tile is usually a good idea that is easy to care for, and it comes in various designs to match the rest of the room.
